I have been reading through the board to learn as much as i can, but still need to ask:We have 50 acres about 20 is pasture. The pasture is rutted (somplaces 1 ft) and is rocky in parts and clay in others. We would like to smooth it down for horses. Also would like to put in a road through the woods and level out some areas for future outbuildings. I could also use a backhoe for drainage dithes, moving cedars, pulling stumps, and a small pond.Locally we have JD,Ford/NH, MasseyF and Kubota. The F/NH said 30hp would be about the right size. Pointing me towards the 1920, he said the 1720 would work but might bog down plowing and harrowing when leveling the pasture. After the big work it'll be used for snow removal, barn work, tilling, tree farming. We are considering used tractors due to $ constraints.I have the following questions:1- Should I be looking at compacts or older tractors?2- Is 30 hp the right one?, 3- I currently have looked at a JD955 w/load, JD850 and 855 both w/load and backhoe, Ford 1900 and 1910 with loader; from a size and power point of view based on your experiences are all of these appropriate?, I like getting the backhoe now but those are also less HP machines. Thanks for your help, I can provide more info if neededSteve

Can't help you with sizing as my experience is limited. But if you decide on the FNH 1920, check my ad at 1997 FNH 1920 FOR SALE. Maybe we can work something out. ....

Thirty hp may be on the light side for your situation. You may want to look at a medium size (one step up from a compact) in the 40-50 hp rangeCheck out something equivalent to the kubota L3450 or 3650 sizes. If you cut your pasture you're going to want something big (like a 9 1/2 foot woods cutter)which is going to need lots of PTO hp. That would cut your 20 acres of pasture in 3 1/2 hours. If you had a 6 foot cutter you would be cutting for almost twice that time (overlapfurther reduces effective cutting width). ....
